LA JOLLA (2-27-20) – Despite outhitting the Torreys the visiting Patriots couldn’t take advantage in the loss on Thursday
La Jolla Country Day would get on the board first in the bottom of the third inning courtesy of Chris Esquivel (RUN) racing home on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
The Torreys would extend their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ben Pajak (1-3, R, RBI, HR) crushed a solo home run over the center-field fence. After a single and a walk, they would add another run when Vincenzo Lucia (1-2, R, RBI) came home on the sacrifice.
A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning would extend the lead to 4-0 for the Torreys.
Patrick Henry would finally string together some offense in the top of the seventh inning starting with a single by Quinn Roeloffs (1-2, R), Max Shabestari (1-3, R) followed with a base hit and Miguel Covarrubias (2-3, RBI) knocked in Roelofs on a single to left field to make it 4-1. The Patriots added a second run to cut the Torrey lead in half when Shabestari raced home on a wild pitch.
Back in the business, the Patriots looked to do some more damage but Esquivel who came into the game in relief had other ideas. He was able to end the threat and the game with punch outs of the next two batters.
For the Patriots taking the loss was Kyle Wilsie who went 3.1 innings while giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and walked 4 and striking out 2, Ben Manis went 2.2 innings of relief in which he gave up 1 run on 1 hit and walked 1 and struck out 1.
On the other side in the victory, Aiden Risse started and collected the win in which he tossed 5 innings. In his five innings of work, he gave up 0 runs on 2 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2.
Esquivel who came into the game in the seventh inning picked up the save in which he struck out 3 batters.
