The Torreys beat Calexico to win the San Diego Section Division IV crown, reversing last year’s winless season.
It’s been a whirlwind year for the La Jolla Country Day School girls soccer team.
This time last year, the Torreys were licking their wounds from a winless season. But on Feb. 22, the team celebrated winning the CIF San Diego Section Division IV title with a 3-1 victory over Calexico at Madison High School in Clairemont.
It was the Torreys’ first division championship in 18 years.
All three Country Day goals were scored by Hannah Eftekhari as free kicks due to penalties, one of them in the dwindling moments of the first half.
“We defended well in the first half but … in the second half, we started really well,” said coach Ada Greenwood. “The depth in the team was hard because [Calexico] had more players on their team that they could rotate in.”
About halfway through the second half, the Torreys started to feel the wear, Greenwood said.
“We started to feel a little down, but we put more energy out there and got two more free kicks in,” he said. “We have a couple of very special players and kids that worked hard and battled.”
Eftekhari has been practicing her free kicks with both feet to create more opportunities to score.
“A lot of programs won’t practice that,” Greenwood said. “But we worked on that a lot. She can bend [the ball] around with both feet.”
The victory was “a great day for the school,” he said. “It has been 18 years since they got a title. It’s about the kids and the community and the culture of the school and the program. I’m just happy for all the girls.”
Greenwood started with the Torreys this season after 19 years of coaching at the University of San Diego.
Before the playoffs began earlier this month, he told the La Jolla Light that he “created an environment of working hard, being on time, having the right focus on every play. If they make a mistake, learn from it and focus on the next play. Mistakes happen, but don’t let it get to them mentally. It’s an 80-minute game with lots of opportunities to repeat the positive habits.”
