Two big third-quarter runs, 3-point shots that fell with regularity and 28 forced turnovers pushed host La Jolla Country Day to an 87-61 win over L.A. Westchester on Tuesday in the first round of the Southern California Regional Division I girls basketball playoffs.
The fifth-seeded Torreys (20-11) had runs of 12-2 and 15-2 in the third period.
Marisa Urbano-Sedlund led the way with 27 points — 11 in the third quarter — as she scored a game-high 27 points and finished with seven 3-pointers. She had a career high eight 3-pointers earlier this season against Santa Fe Christian.
“This was probably my last home game, and I was so excited,” said Urbano-Sedlund, a senior who will play at Redlands. “I wanted to give it my all.
“We always play hard, and the coaches do a great job scouting the opponent. We know exactly what to do.”
No. 12 Westchester (17-10) presented problems early with its size. But when Destiny Brown went out with three fouls midway through the second quarter, the Comets went into a funk.
“Watching film, we knew their size would be a problem,” said Torreys coach Terri Bamford. “But our pressure got to their guards.
“And I can’t say enough good things about Marisa. She has played like that all season.”
LJCD’s Jazzy Anousinh had 15 points. Te-hina Paopao added 13 and Bobi Mack finished with 12. Paopao also had nine rebounds.
The Torreys finished with 11 3-pointers and turned the ball over just eight times.
Cheyanne Whitfield paced Westchester with 21 points. Arianna Grimes finished with 12 and Brown 10.
The Torreys advance to Thursday’s second round at Granada Hills.
