BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan has announced the addition of Christine Campbell '17 to the Mountain Hawks' coaching staff. A three-time All-Patriot League selection and two-time Patriot League champion for the Mountain Hawks, Campbell returns to her alma mater following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Robert Morris University.
"We are thrilled to welcome home Christine Campbell," Troyan said. "We know Christine and she knows Lehigh. Christine brings a championship pedigree with her, and her experience as a Division I assistant for the past couple of years will be invaluable. Aside from Christine's tremendous personality, she will bring a "can do" mentality, tremendous softball knowledge, and will serve as a great role model for our student-athletes."
Last season at Robert Morris, Campbell mentored Colonials freshman pitcher Dana Vatakis to NEC All-Rookie Team honors.
"Christine comes off two years of Division I coaching experience," Troyan said. "This past season she served as the lead assistant and gained experience in every facet of the game. Similarly, we intend to utilize Christine in almost every capacity. She will assist with all aspects of offense, outfield defense, and she will work with Steph Covelle on opponent game planning while providing support to Steph and our pitchers."
The San Diego native enjoyed an impressive four-year career in the Brown and White, where she amassed a 69-24 record and had a 2.17 ERA. Campbell was a three-time All-Patriot League honoree, earning first team honors in 2015.
Campbell saved her best for her senior season, going 22-6 with a 2.21 ERA and earning Patriot League Pitcher of the Year honors and third team NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region laurels. On the final day of the 2017 Patriot League Tournament, Campbell pitched back-to-back gems as Lehigh beat Boston University twice to claim the program's 14th Patriot League championship. Campbell threw 14 innings that day, allowing just two earned runs, and was named Patriot League Tournament MVP.
As a sophomore in 2015, Campbell went 17-2 with a 1.63 ERA and teamed with Emily Bausher to help Lehigh rank second nationally with a 1.52 team ERA. That year Campbell threw her only career no-hitter in a win at Colgate and also threw 6.2 scoreless innings to earn the win in Lehigh's NCAA Tournament victory over Central Arkansas, to date, Lehigh's last win in NCAA Regional competition.
Campbell's 69 career victories rank second in program history and she also ranks third in school annals in saves (six) and appearances (117).
Campbell graduated from Lehigh in 2017 with a degree in finance and added her MBA from Robert Morris in 2019.
Following her Lehigh graduation, Campbell competed internationally for the Republic of Ireland in the 2017 European Championships in Italy. Her grandfather was born in Ireland, giving her dual citizenship. Campbell pitched 48.2 of the team's 57.0 innings, posting a 3-3 record with a 2.88 ERA. She threw complete game shutouts against Lithuania and Croatia, helping Ireland to a 15th place finish.
